More on DERING DYE DAYS - At the farm in Smarden with a voucher towards your lunch at The Dering Arms. Report on Sept 14, 2019. 'Wild Dyes of Autumn and Winter' ended up as a Dering Dye Day. Effectively a fun 'bushcraft' day with a posh lunch! We explored the farm for possible dye material, arranged it in a prepared cotton tote, steamed it while we had lunch, and then stuffed it with bubble wrap and (if wished) sponged on a modifier. Merino roving was dyed with walnuts, and blackberries (separately) and the effect of pH and modifiers was also demonstrated. Admittedly, blackberry is not the fastest of dyes, but it certainly gives a beautiful range of colours, and the modifiers can help to make it more secure.
